Hot Author of the Week: Heather Karn

Hey,

I know it has been a while since our last interview, but I have another author that I would like to introduce. I have gotten to know Heather through a Facebook group that we are both a part of and I would like to say that I am looking forward to getting to know more about her. I was excited when she said that she would be willing to do an interview for my blog.

I have not gotten the chance to read any of her work yet, but I am super stoked to start her series the Weregal Chronicles. The first book, Perfect Scents, is about Joette (Joey) and her journey as she meets a race of werecats who disappeared nearly 20 years before. What will she find out about these mysterious creatures and herself?

As promised, here is the interview!

Heather Karn

1. What or who made you want to start writing?

The first time I realized that i wanted to be an author was in 8th grade. I'd written a scary short story (okay, not really scary, but I tried), and that story became the first chapter of my first novel. It was short, but hey, I was young then. It was followed by one and a half sequels- book 3 of the series never got finished. In college I rewrote the first book, but after I graduated, writing went by the wayside for other hobbies. I think I burned myself out and had a strong case of self doubt that I could or would ever get published. In the spring of 2015 I started to read again, and loved what I read. These novels inspired me to start writing again, and since then, I haven't stopped!

2. Who inspires you to keep writing?

My family and friends are very supportive, and I appreciate that more than they know, but the people who inspire me to keep writing are the ones who got me inspired to write again in the first place: the indie YA authors that I found and have loved. I follow them on facebook, and I love how they interact with their fans, and I think to myself: if they can do it, so can I! And when I'm not feeling like writing, I go to their books and read, and it inspires me all over again to keep going and that the first, or even fourth, draft don't have to be perfect. You'll get there.

3. Who was your favorite character to create?

Probably Aunt Gwen. There's just something about her. She seems familiar, like I know someone like her, but I can't place who it is. And she's hysterical.

4. What are you working on right now?

Book 2 of the Weregal Chronicles (title TBA)

5. What Book/s got you started reading?

The moment I found Tamora Pierce's books in my freshman year, I was hooked on reading! I couldn't put any of her books down. After my long hiatus of not reading much (maybe a novel or two a year...maybe), I picked a book from my kindle that I'd found for free, and haven't stopped reading since. It was Relentless by Karen Lynch. Again, couldn't put it down! Then I found Melissa Haag's books, and I've been reading ever since.

6. What is something fun about you that your readers don't already know?

Hmmm, well I'm the oldest of a set of triplets. That's probably about the biggest thing that readers may not know about me. I have an identical sister, and our other sister is fraternal. Heck, our younger sister looks more like me and my identical sister than the fraternal one. But something that most people probably don't know is that I have a thing for collecting furniture. It's really bad. Not that I buy it all, I just want to buy it all! Especially if it's free or cheap and in good condition. I'm not a hoarder by any means, but I do love me some furniture. It makes me happy.

7. If you could recommend one book, not your own, from any time period to read what would it be?

Touch by Melissa Haag.

Hello Again.
So I am getting bored of talking to myself. If you stop by please leave a comment or something showing that you want to know more about what I have to say. I don't ask for opinions for my health, I genuinely want to know what books you all like. So please, if I ask for reader responses (like this post) leave a short comment!

It is Friday again, and for those of you who may be new to my blog, that means that today is the day when you get to tell me what to do. I am always looking for good books to add to my To Be Read (TBR) list. Give me some recommendations.

Waiting on Wednesday

Hey all!

Have you ever read an author that as soon as you hear another book is coming out you squeal with joy and then get angry because the book isn't going to be out for like A WHOLE MONTH??? Well I am guilty of that right now. I am in love with 2 authors, Jaymin Eve and Leia Stone. Now if you don't already know they have teamed up to create the awesomeness that is The Hive Trilogy. This starts with Ash. I have read the first 2 books of this series, and let me tell you now: worth it!

This week I found out that the newest book in the trilogy will be coming out in September 2016. *Fangirl Squeal* I absolutely cannot wait for this newest installation :) The name of the 3rd book in the trilogy is Annihilate.

If you have not read the first 2 books in the series, I highly suggest you start now, because you won't want to miss a single second of this amazing series!

Just One More Chapter...

Hey!

OMG I am so excited! Broken Compass is finally out and I couldn't put it down. I made the mistake of starting it late last night and I stayed up until about 1 o'clock in the morning finishing it :) If you love Jaymin's books then I am sure you will love this one too. I was so excited to learn more about Max and Misha.

What book have you read recently that you just couldn't put down?

A Case of the Monday's

Good Morning! So today I sent my son on the bus to his first real day of school. It is a little bittersweet for me, so I am in a kind of a nostalgic mood. I just can't believe that my baby is almost 6 years old. But I digress.

Lately I have been watching Bones with my husband as our adult time after our son goes to bed. I love this series so much that when I first started watching it I decided that I wanted to read the books to. So today is about the Temperance Brennan series by Kathy Reichs. The first book is Deja Dead, so if you like the TV series Bones then you should check out this amazing series.

Let me know what you are thinking about now that it is getting towards the end of the year.

Back to School Scavenger Hunt

Let’s have some fun! I love scavenger hunts and I thought it would be a fun way to build followers and get people reading my blog. This will be book related, obviously, and is supposed to be fun. That being said there is a prize at the end of the rainbow. The first 3 people to solve the scavenger hunt will receive prizes. Prizes include a signed book or gift cards from winners choice of Amazon, Barnes & Noble, or Audible.

Here’s how it works. We will start on Sunday August 28th and I will post a new clue every day ending midnight on Saturday September 3. To enter you must be a follower of my blog. I will post clues on my forum. The clues will narrow down the answer progressively as the game goes on. You will need to solve each clue before you can move onto the next one because the previous clue leads to the location of the new clue.

Waiting on Wednesday

Hello :) It's Wednesday again, which means that you all get to find out what book I am most excited for this week. I am sure many of you have read some of Karpov Kinrade's books, but have you seen the Vampire Girl series? Due to family problems the 3rd book in this series has been slow coming, but that doesn't mean it won't be awesome!!!!!

I can't wait until Silver Flame comes out and we get to see what happens between Fen and Ari! Here's to hoping that we get to read this soon! Until then, if you have not read Vampire Girl or Midnight Star, the first 2 books in the series I would suggest reading them now. You won't regret these amazing books :)

If you are not sure if you will like the books, here is the official book trailer to give you a little taste.

A Case of the Monday's

Today I took my son to do some testing before he starts Kindergarten! I am so excited and a little scared, but what can a mother do? He starts school full time next week and I am slightly freaking out. He will have one day of school this week to get him used to it and my plan is to spend a little time for myself reading.

One of the genre's that I like to read is mysteries. It has been a while since I have read a good mystery that pulled me in and wouldn't let go. One book that I have not read yet is The Bone Collector by Jeffery Deaver. I loved the movie, but I have found that most books are 10x better than the movie, so I am slightly excited to read this book :)

I need more ideas for mysteries or thrillers that I can read. So leave a comment and give me some suggestions.

Just One More Chapter...

Perfekt Control is the much anticipated 2nd book in S.T. Bende's Aere Saga. I loved Tyr & Mia's story and couldn't wait until Brynn and Henrik finally got their turn and now my wait is over.

Brynn and Henrik's story is full of trials and adventures. I absolutely loved this story and can't wait until the next story comes out. I stayed up all night reading my ARC and don't regret a minute of it.

What is your most recent just one more chapter?

Book Boyfriend of the Week

This week my book boyfriend is from Lila Felix's Seeking Havok. This book in general was amazing and I am looking forward to my next read from this author.

I loved how this man was able to see the best in this broken girl and how he was able to recognize that she needed to be whole herself before she could be with him. Fade is the guy Jocelyn is able to spill all of her secrets to because she will never have to see him in person. Cal is the guy that Havok is crushing on, but won't let to close because of her messed up life. What happens when these two worlds collide? Sparks, that's what!!!

I love hearing about some of your favorite book boyfriends, because let's face it we all have a book boyfriend harem at this point! Let me know who your current book boyfriend is and why you absolutely love him. Or hey if it is a book girlfriend I want to know about them too :)

Blog Parade Guest Post: Brenda Pandos

The Vampires and the Talisman Crossover By Brenda Pandos

The Vampires is the third part of the Supernatural Chronicles: The New Orleans Collection, and it features my characters from my popular Talisman series. When the Dynamis authors first started talking about this collaboration, I jumped on the idea of writing about the vampire race. I could work within the framework of the Supernatural Chronicles while getting to play with these characters again.

Julia and Nicholas were my first characters and they’ll always be my first loves. They brought me into this writer world that has become my dream job. They and the rest of the cast were already fully developed, ready for a new adventure so I gave them this one, a note delivered with a mysterious message that leads them to New Orleans.

Although The Vampires picks up after the four books of the Talisman series, it’s okay if you haven’t read them yet. You’ll still be able to understand The Vampires novella. In fact, The Vampires is a great introduction into Julia and Nicholas’ world, and hopefully, you’ll enjoy them and will want to read the others. If you’ve already read their story, then I hope you enjoy revisiting with these characters that mean so much to me.
About Brenda Pandos:

Mommy warrior, comma-kazi, wife, computer whisperer, Pinterest addict, chocolate enthusiast, vampire and zombie slayer, merman magnet, and lover of all things pure and right. Well... maybe after a cup of coffee or two.

Author Brenda Pandos lives in California and is surrounded by the loves of her life—her husband, her incredible boys, a grumpy cat, eight chickens and her characters. Before becoming a full-time author, she worked as an IT administrator. After her son’s ASD diagnosis, everything changed. Being pregnant and embarking on a 35 hour a week in-home therapy schedule was grueling to say the least. She craved a meaningful escape.

Never having aspired to write before, she wrote her own vampire tale for kicks. Four months later, The Emerald Talisman was born. Unsure who'd want to buy her novel, she entered her fledgling book in the Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award and placed as a Quarter-finalist. That gave her the courage to go Indie and from there, she traversed into a life she’d never imagined and loves to this day. And since a small group of fans grew into a larger group of fans, all cheering her onto books two, three, four, five... and so on, she hasn't looked back.

A Case of the Monday's

I recently decided to re-read my copy of the Da Vinci Code because it is one of my favorite's. I love puzzles and this book keeps you guessing from start to finish. I know most people have probably watched the movie, but if you are a true book nerd (like yours truly :) ) Then you should definitely read the book as well as the first in the series, Angels & Demons.

When I discovered this series I was immediately hooked on all things Dan Brown so I decided to read all of his books! That's what you're supposed to do right? Well they are amazing and I would highly recommend any of his books if you are looking for action, suspense, and a good mystery.

What mystery have you read lately that you want to share?

Book Boyfriend of the Week

Recently I decided to read Being Jamie Baker by Kelly Oram and fell in love with the books. If you have not read them I would definitely recommend it. It is also safe for young teens, so feel free to share with anyone who might be interested.

This week's book boyfriend is Ryan Miller. I fell in love with his happy attitude and never give up way to get into Jamie's life. On page 6 Ryan is described as having honey-blond hair, blue eyes and a tall, lean build. He was the All-American-boy-next-door.

Waiting on Wednesday...

Hey everyone, sorry I missed a couple of days. Been working on my application for grad school and yesterday my car decided that it didn't want to start. But I have today's post.

This week's Waiting on Wednesday is inspired by S.T. Bende's new series the Aere Saga. She has released her first book Perfekt Order, which I would highly recommend checking out, and I can't wait for the second book in this series, Perfekt Control. This follows along in the same world as her previous series, the Elsker Saga, but centers around different gods each book.

While Perfekt Order centered around the Norse God of War Tyr, the new book Perfekt Control will focus on Brynn and Henrick, Tyr's bodyguards. This book is set to release on February 9, 2016, so get into this author with both series. You won't regret buying these books.

Book Boyfriend of the Week

Recently I have begun reading S.T. Bende's Elsker Saga. I have fallen in love with the Norse mythology that is described in these stories. Because of this I can absolutely say that I have fallen in love with the male lead, Ull Myhr.

The first description of Ull comes from Chapter 2, page 19, when Kristia is in the museum before she knows who he is.

My eye-level hit at his chest where a dark sweater barely concealed the muscles of a well-defined torso. His thumbs rested casually in his pockets, and his arms strained against the sweater. I looked up, and up some more, until I finally reached his face. He stood a whole head above even the tallest visitor in the museum, and I was ashamed to admit, my jaw opened just a little as I took in his features.

A shock of touseld, blond hair rested atop an exquisitely-sculpted face. He had eyes as blue as a cloudless sky, cheekbones as chiseled as pictures I'd seen of the Alps, and lips the pale pink of my grandmother's roses. His jaw was square and strong with a hint of stubble, and his nose looked like it was lifted off a Roman statue.

If you have not read this series I would highly recommend it, but until then let me know who your current book boyfriend is.

Hot Author of the Week: Kate Danley

This week's Hot Author is Kate Danley. The popular author of series like Maggie McKay, Magical Tracker, O'Hare House Mysteries, and Twilight Shifter's agreed to be a guest author on DC's A Book A Day and answer some questions about herself that her readers may not already know.

What/who made you want to start writing?

When I was a kid, I used to have a 45-minute bus ride to elementary school. I had this best friend named Austin Adamson and we would make up stories to keep ourselves amused. We always swore we were going to grow up to be authors. That year, I won my class's Halloween themed story contest with a grand prize of a whole family-sized package of mini-Reese's cups. I figured this writing thing was definitely for me. So, that's where it all began - friendship and chocolate. Can't fight those forces.

Who inspires you to keep writing?

As cliché as it sounds, it is my fans. Writing is hard. Full stop. There are days that doing something else… anything else… looks awfully appealing. But I have received the kindest emails of support and read some of the most wonderful reviews from people who say my books gave them a moment of escape from this crazy world. I believe it is our sacred duty to discover how we can make this living thing easier for each other, and once you've discovered how you can help, you have a responsibility. I am not talented with medicine or teaching or building bridges, but I can tell stories.  And so, I do.

Who was your favorite character to create?

Oh… that's like asking a mother who her favorite child is… but a character that leapt fully formed from the page and completely surprised me is a secondary character in my Maggie books named Pipistrelle.  I have no idea where he came from, but whenever he arrives, he shows up and lets me know what he has to say. I just take dictation.

What are you working on right now?

In the past, I have written whichever way the wind blew, but this year, I decided to dedicate myself solely to my urban fantasy series, Maggie MacKay: Magical Tracker. I'm working on book five, book six, and book seven right now. Maggie began in the days before I knew how to outline, so although it takes much longer, I stick to that original process. It makes the story twists surprising and fresh (heck, I don't even know what is about to happen!), but it means that I'll get 10k words written and then go, "Oh wait. This needs to happen in a later book." Hence how I am working on books five… and six… and seven… all at one time…

What book/s got you started reading?

I started off loving mysteries and historical fiction: Nancy Drew, Linda Craig, the Shoe books, Little House, Secret Garden, Anne of Green Gables... oh, it goes on and on.  But the first book that was so powerful it made me cry was A Wrinkle in Time. That was when I began falling in love with the fantasy genre.  From there I read The Hero and the Crown by Robin McKinley and I was hooked.

What is something fun about you that your readers don't already know?

I can recite the entire Walrus & The Carpenter poem from memory. And my favorite television show of all time is Green Wing.

If you could recommend one book, not your own, from any time period to read what would it be?
A book that changed my view of the world is Mountains Beyond Mountains. It is the absolutely gorgeous biography of Dr. Paul Farmer and Ophelia Dahl (yes, daughter of author Roald Dahl.) These two people have dedicated their lives to bringing medical services to impoverished communities and their story is astonishing. Read it knowing your life will be changed for the better by the time you get to the final page.
